17 U.S.C. § 506(a) Covers criminal copyright infringement, which occurs when someone willfully infringes on a copyright for financial gain. Penalties for criminal copyright infringement are outlined in 18 U.S.C. § 2319. The U.S. Copyright Office defines copyright infringement this way: "As a general matter, copyright infringement occurs when a copyrighted work is reproduced, distributed, performed, publicly displayed, or made into a derivative work without the permission of the copyright owner."
