108 bead glass mala

A mala is a string of beads used for prayer and meditation. Made of a 108 beads and a “guru”/"mountain" bead that unites the strand into a circle. This larger bead signifies the beginning and the end of the mala. With each bead, a mantra or prayer is repeated a total of 108 times. There are many explanations for why a mala is comprised of 108 beads. Some believe that it is related to the 108 energy lines that converge to form the heart chakra. Others believe that it is related to the 108 pressure points throughout the body and some believe that the sun’s diameter is 108 times greater than that of the earth. The use of a mala during meditation or a mindfulness practice helps increase focus and it is also fairly practical in that it keeps track of the number of times a mantra or meditation has been recited. It is believed that physical contact with the mala can provide healing, curative benefits. A mala can be worn as a decorative accessory. By wearing it, it allows the individual to be reminded of the importance of their meditation practice even if they are not meditating at the time. In between each bead, there is a knot that prevents the loss of beads in case the mala breaks as well as gives some space between each bead as to avoid them rubbing together. Each mala is made from various bead materials (glass, gemstones) and cotton thread that is used to form the base. This mala is made from green glass (6mm) beads and a larger guru bead.
