This fascinating piece of WWII-era history is a souvenir powder compact designed in the shape of a U.S. Army officer’s service cap.
Era & Origin: These were made in the 1940s during World War II, often sold through military post exchanges or jewelry stores catering to servicemen.
Design: Compact lid is shaped like a peaked officer’s cap, complete with visor, braided chin strap, and an enameled eagle insignia (the U.S. Army eagle).
Purpose: Functioned as a women’s powder compact, mirror and powder compartment.
Sweetheart Gifts: During WWII, there was a huge market for “sweetheart” items, tokens that soldiers gave to wives, girlfriends, mothers, or sisters before shipping out. These included compacts, lockets, pins, and bracelets often decorated with military insignia.
Rarity: While sweetheart jewelry is fairly common, compacts shaped like officer’s hats are more unusual and sought after by collectors.
This compact represents the merging of wartime culture with everyday life. It’s a small luxury object adapted to carry patriotic symbolism — a blend of beauty, love, and service. Women could keep this in their purse, touch up their makeup, and feel close to their soldier abroad.
