The motto "Craignez honte," meaning "Fear shame," was associated with William Cavendish-Bentinck, the 6th Duke of Portland (1857-1943). This motto is prominently featured on his bookplate. He was a prominent figure in British society, known for his wealth, political career, and involvement in thoroughbred horse racing.
