For your consideration is this vintage shipping container produced by Swift Company. The front side of the box is embossed and reads "24-12 OZ (340 GR) NET TINS / Swift's Premium / Corned Beef / PRODUCT OF URAGUAY / INDUSTRIA URAGUAYA / CANNED FOR SWIFT'S COMPANY / GENERAL OFFICE CHICAGO ILL". The sides are embossed with Swift's logo and one side also reads "CORNED BEEF". According to Culinary Historian of Chicago, "Swift Co. truck transporting meat produced in Santana do Livramento and Rosário do Sul in Brazil and taken to the Port of Montevideo, Uruguay by rail and then by ship to Chicago, Illinois to be processed and then to England where it would be transported by land to Germany to feed The Allies after the Second World War in 1955." This was sourced from my family's property in an old smoke house...my grandparents were hoarders and my great-grandfather had a propensity to pick up items that were not his...we found lots of hidey holes. May have been something he sourced whilst visiting other children around Lake Okeechobee working on the canals. One can only imagine. The box measures 15.25 inches long x 7.1 inches wide x 7.5 inches and weighs 2 lbs 11 ounces. I've had the piece in my personal collection for a few years and it looks lovely with a few orchids within in and used as a centerpiece. Fits in well with farmhouse or industrial decor, or perfect for collector's.Condition: Item has been steam cleaned, but some grime remains inside.
