Unusual and rare late 1940s/early 1950s clear rhinestone clip earrings using Judith McCann’s patented “wingback” design.
Excellent vintage condition. Stones are clear and bright. No patina on metal. 1” tall x .75” wide.
Don’t know what a wingback is or how to wear it? I didn’t either when I inherited these.
Wearing instructions for wingback earrings: The stem and the wing ("Y" part) should not be engaged. The wing slips over the narrowest part of the ear edge in front while the stem stays behind the ear. Slip the earrings down so that the wing ("Y" part) sits on top of the earlobe and the stem is left behind the ear. See picture of an original ad for a visual context.
This link provides a fascinating history and a copy of the original 1947 patent: Https://madgeshatbox.com/the-story-of-judith-mccann-wingback-earrings/?srsltid=AfmBOoquEwLyNIMVsLNvVtGutjMPGNKVRAlsN7Yty0IoyoGptMDUO0YT
Perfect for any jewelry collector, lover of quirky things, or woman in STEM (because, seriously, how rockstar was Judith to come up with this idea and secure a patent in the 40s).
