Captain Sigsbee and the U.S. Battleship Maine souvenir spoon.
Very good vintage condition. There are two discoloration marks on the back of the spoon. Review pictures for better details of condition. I took pictures in various lights to help you see the detail.
Manufactured by Standard, silver plate I think. I cleaned it with silver polish as it was pretty tarnished before then.
6" long teaspoon
The spoon part shows a picture of the U.S. Battleship Maine (labeled), and the words: Destroyed February 15, 1898
The decorative handle shows a U.S. shield, an anchor and the Captain's likeness with his name.
The back of the handle is labeled Standard
Charles Dwight Sigsbee was best remembered as the captain of the USS Maine, which exploded in Havana Harbor, Cuba, February 15, 1898. The explosion set off the events that led up to the start of the Spanish American War. Sigsbee and his officers were exonerated by a court of inquiry.
