See photo examples, as is. History Heishi beads originated with the Santo Domingo Pueblo people of New Mexico. They are considered one of the oldest forms of jewelry in New Mexico.  Heishi beads are a product of cultural heritage that has been passed down through generations.  How they are made  The material is sliced into strips, then cut into small squares. Holes are drilled through the center, traditionally with a cactus spear. The rough squares are shaped and smoothed by holding the string against a turning stone wheel. Uses Heishi beads are used to make necklaces, bracelets, and other jewelry.  They are highly valued and sought after by collectors and jewelry enthusiasts worldwide.  I bought the necklace and the earrings from local artisans in the Carribean islands.
