The Cape Cod house goes back to the very beginning of what would later be called "Plasticville." It is believed to be one of the very first structures that Bachmann made, circa 1948 or 1949. Its creation did not stem from a demand for buildings for the then expanding toy train boom, but was rather created simply as a toy for children.
Bachmann would use this house in a variety of different combinations, among them was the HY-6 House and Yard Accessories Unit, and the VU-4 Community Unit, which is one of the few Master Units that pre-date 1950. After 1950, this house would also be incorporated into many other "Master Units" that were designed to be used with the popular toy train scales of the time - "O" and "S."
