kleiss @sworrell73 hello- I’ve sold several of these beds without the back foam. Im not sure if the buyers rigged up the backs with their own foam or simply used as is. What I can say is that the seatbelt runs through the bottom of the bed which secures it to the car seat along with the tether for the collar. Therefore the back piece isn’t entirely essential for functionality. Your pet can still sit securely and boosted up to see out the window which is what most people are looking for.

kleiss @sworrell73 The missing back piece may add a touch more stabilization?? Or it could just be more for looks or protection from pet hair on your car. Either way, my past purchasers have given 5 star ratings on that product (w/ missing back piece) so it seems to be functional regardless . Hope that helps!
