Matryoshka is used as the symbol for the epithet Mother Russia. Matryoshka dolls are a traditional representation of the mother carrying a child within her and can be seen as a representation of a chain of mothers carrying on the family legacy through the child in their womb.
The dolls were first designed and painted by two men; Sergey Malyutin and Vasily Zvyozdochkin in 1890 north of Moscow, which continues to be famous for its Slavic culture and folk art. The word 'matryoshka' translates to mean 'little matron' and is a common shortening of the old Russian name Matryona or Matriosha.
