Antique Pre-1900 Masons Patent Nov 30th 1858 Jar With Ball Bros Glass Insert Lid

This antique quart size Mason’s jar is a rare find for collectors. With a beautiful green aqua color and large volume, this jar is perfect for display and storage. The jar was manufactured in the United States by Ball Bros. Glass Manufacturing Company, c1886-1888. The Ball brothers Buffalo plant made jars embossed “MASON’S (arched), PATENT NOV 30th 1858 (all horizontal) on the front, all in the block lettering. The bottom is embossed with the number “23” (rare early font) in the center. Also, all embossing is strong, clear and easy to read. This jar was made utilizing a mouth blown mode and has the crude features of early jars such as the stone ground lip, thick side seams, bubbles, obvious whittling/ seeding throughout and a bottom ripple where the jar curves inward. A couple of unique features to take note of are the smooth, shard glasses pieces embedded near the bottom circle seam, and the line of bubbles in the top screw portion of the glass mold. Most likely these are errors on part of the mold cutter, but it certainly makes for a unique, old bottle. The zinc screw on band holds the appropriate and rare glass insert embossed “BALL BROS GLASS MFG CO” on top part of glass circle, and “BUFFALO NY” on the bottom half of the insert. Measures 7”H with lid x 3.75” base diameter. Condition is very nice with no breakage, chips or cracks in the jar or lid. The old zinc band is somewhat bent on top rim, but secures tightly. Perfect addition to any antique bottle collection.
